TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Foreign Affairs of the PDIP DPP Ahmad Basarah said that the 5th President of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, will meet with the leader of the Catholic community, Pope Francis today. The meeting will take place after Megawati has fulfilled the agenda of the World Leaders Summit on Children's Rights.

"The meeting plan has been finalized by the protocol of the Holy See of the Vatican," explained Basarah in his official statement received by Tempo, Monday, February 3, 2025.

Basarah explained that Megawati received an invitation to be a speaker at the forum some time ago which will also be attended by world leaders. In the forum which will be held on Monday, February 3, 2025, Megawati plans to explain about children's rights.

"Mrs. Megawati will convey a message regarding concern for humanity, especially those related to children's rights today," said Basarah.

In addition to Megawati, other panelists who are also said to be present include Queen Rania al-Abdullah of Jordan, Grand Imam of Al Azhar Egypt Ahmed El-Tayeb, Deputy Prime Minister of Italy Antonio Tajani, and Gambia's Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara. Meanwhile, the introduction of this panel will be guided by the Secretary for Relations with States, Msgr. Paul Richard Gallagher.

The Head of the PDIP Faction of the MPR RI added that Megawati's presence is interesting because Megawati is also present in her capacity as a Zayed Award judge and is likely to fill one panel with Ahmad El-Tayeb. However, the presence of the imam is still being confirmed further by the committee.

"Mrs. Megawati will meet the Pope and possibly be on the same panel as the Grand Imam of Al Azhar Egypt, Ahmed El-Tayeb. Both are influential world figures. The committee is still waiting for confirmation of the Grand Imam's attendance," said Basarah.

Previously, Megawati was also known to have attended the Unbroken 5P Kids Alliance meeting at the San Salvatore di Lauro Museum, Rome, on Sunday, February 2, 2025 evening, local time. This agenda is still part of a series of World Leaders Summit on Children's Rights meetings in the Vatican which is scheduled for today.

On that occasion, Megawati was accompanied by her son M. Rizki Pratama and her daughter who is also the Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani. Then also accompanied by PDIP Treasurer Olly Dondokambey, PDIP DPP Chair Bintang Puspayoga, Professor of the Faculty of International Relations, St. Petersburg University, Connie Rahakundini Bakrie and Deputy Head of BPIP Rima Agristina.
