TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The 97th Academy Awards, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 2, 2025, delivered a major surprise. Mikey Madison, the 25-year-old actress, took home the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in 'Anora'.
She triumphed over industry veterans like Demi Moore ('The Substance'), Fernanda Torres ('I’m Still Here'), Cynthia Erivo ('Wicked'), and Karla Sofia Gascon ('Emilia Perez').
Many had predicted Demi Moore as the frontrunner, with her performance in 'The Substance' widely praised as one of the best of her career. She played Elisabeth Sparkle, an Oscar-winning actress who transitioned into a fitness guru and TV personality, only to see her career collapse after turning 50.
The film explores themes of aging in Hollywood, identity, body image, and societal expectations.
However, in the end, the Oscar went to Madison, who starred in 'Anora', a film about a sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch.
The decision sparked heated debates across social media, with many fans voicing their disappointment and arguing that Moore deserved to finally win her first Oscar after decades in the industry.
Social Media Reactions to Demi Moore’s Loss
Moore’s loss quickly became a trending topic online. As of Monday, March 3, at 3:06 PM, posts about Demi Moore on X had surpassed 347,000, while Mikey Madison-related discussions reached 295,000. Many netizens viewed Madison’s win as an injustice.
One user on X wrote, "Look, OK….I Love Mikey Madison, but DEMI MOORE WAS ROBBED."
Another added, "Sorry, no. there's a mistake. demi moore, u won best actress. demi moore won. this is not a joke. come up here. this a not a joke, i'm afraid they read the wrong thing. this is not a joke. demi moore has won. demi moore: lead actress."
Some users also highlighted Hollywood’s bias against horror films and actresses over 50.
"My heart broke as much as Demi Moore’s did when she didn’t hear her name. This was her year for sure. Horror always getting unfairly treated!" one post read.

Beyond age and genre bias, some pointed out the irony of 'The Substance' tackling industry injustices while its lead actress suffered a similar fate in real life.

Before the Oscars, Moore had built strong momentum. She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress and earned accolades from the Critics Choice Awards and Screen Actors Guild (SAG).
It was the first Oscar nomination of her decades-long career; an achievement many felt should have culminated in a historic win.
However, on Sunday night, that dream ended when Emma Stone announced Mikey Madison as the winner. According to People, Madison, visibly shocked, delivered an emotional speech.
"Hollywood always felt so far away from me, so to be here standing in this room tonight is really incredible," Madison said in her speech, thanking 'Anora' director, Sean Baker: “I love you so much. This is all because of you.”
Despite missing out on the Oscar, Moore received unwavering support from her loved ones. Her daughter, Scout Willis, took to Instagram Stories to share her pride, posting a photo of Moore with the caption: “Queen of my heart.”
