TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairperson of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Cholil Nafis said that the fasting month of Ramadan 1446 Hijri or 2025 may see different starting dates among religious organizations. However, Cholil said that Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on the same day by all.
Cholil conveyed this through his X account on February 28, 2025. He explained that the potential difference is due to the possibility of moon sighting (the determination method of the beginning of the Hijri calendar month) in Indonesia, according to the MABIMS system criteria, which might only be fulfilled in Aceh.
"Meanwhile, in East Java, especially in the eastern region, it is even more difficult to 'imkan' (observe) the moon," said Cholil.
The MABIS system is used by the member countries of MABIMS (Ministers of Religion in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore) to formulate new criteria for the visibility of the new moon, which is a minimum hilal height of 3 degrees with an elongation angle of 6.4 degrees.
Meanwhile, according to Cholil, at the end of the month of Syaban, on February 28, the height of the hilal in Jakarta was already at 4 degrees with an elongation of 6.02 degrees. While in East Java, the hilal height was at 3 degrees and the elongation was 5.9 degrees, which means that the elongation did not meet the MABIMS system criteria.
"At the end of Ramadan during the meeting (Ijtimak) on March 27 at 10.02 WIB, the hilal height at sunset in Jakarta was 1 degree 28' and the elongation was 6.5 degrees. But for now, the MABIMS agreement on height and elongation has been met. Insha Allah, the beginning of Syawal will not have any differences," said Cholil.
Cholil mentioned that the potential for a different start of fasting would depend on the adherence to the MABIMS criteria.
If the moon sighting results are seen in the Aceh zone, the first fasting day will be Saturday, March 1.
However, Cholil said that if there are no sighting results, then Syaban will be completed or extended to 30 days if the hilal is not sighted on February 28.
"The government can have a scenario: it (start of Ramadan) can be determined on Saturday, regardless of the success of the sighting," he said.
Cholil stated that the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah calendars for 2025 indicate that the 1st of Ramadan 1446 falls on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
However, he said that the determination of the beginning of Ramadan in NU is always accompanied by a statement that the decision of the beginning of the Hijri month awaits the sighting results.
"If the hilal is not sighted, then the month of Syaban will be completed for 30 days, and fasting will start on Sunday, March 2, 2025," said Cholil.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs will hold an isbat session to determine the 1st of Ramadan 1446 Hijri or the first day of Ramadan fasting at the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium in the Ministry of Religious Affairs building in Central Jakarta on Friday afternoon, February 28, 2025.
The isbat session will be held at 18.30 WIB after a hilal monitoring seminar.
