TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Around 900 foreign tourists remained missing in Nepal and China's Tibet region on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after flash floods and landslides killed at least 180 people, according to official data, as quoted from Antara, citing Anadolu.

The Nepal Tourism Board reported that 644 foreign and local tourists were missing on the Nepal side of the border.

These included 178 from India, 65 from the US, 53 from Ukraine, 51 from Malaysia, 35 from Australia, 33 from the UK, 25 from Canada, nine Singaporeans, and eight Germans.

Other tourists still missing were from France, Hungary, Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Portugal, Russia, and several other countries.

The Nepal Tourism Board stated that 127 Nepalese tourists were also unaccounted for.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said 100 Chinese nationals were missing on the Nepal side of the border due to the flash floods. In Tibet, 260 foreigners remained unaccounted for, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang arrived in Tibet, locally known as Xizang Autonomous Region, on Thursday, leading a delegation to supervise search and rescue operations following the devastating disaster, assess damage and meet affected residents and relief personnel, as reported by Xinhua.

After the flash flood that devastated the Nepal-Tibet border, the Nepalese army evacuated 336 people, including 45 foreign tourists, by helicopter from the flooded area in a rescue operation on Thursday, the Nepal News news portal reported, citing Nepal Army spokesperson Raja Ram Basnet.

Basnet added that around 4,000 military personnel were deployed in the rescue efforts.

Satellite imagery indicates that the flood was likely triggered by a large chunk of ice that broke away from a Himalayan glacier about 20 kilometers northeast of the Rasuwa-Rasuwagadhi border crossing.

Nepalese authorities have confirmed 177 deaths and noted that 826 others are missing.

Meanwhile, Chinese authorities said three people have died and 558 are still missing, including foreign nationals.
