TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The new management of Bandung Zoo has conducted a mass vaccination for around 200 avian species in response to the unpredictable weather conditions in Bandung during the current dry season peak.
"The weather is unpredictable, sometimes scorching hot, while at other times the temperature drops to 17 degrees Celsius," said Rohman Suryaman, the zoo's animal curator, on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
Out of a total of around 700 resident animals at the Bandung Zoo, avian species make up about one-third. These avian species include cockatoos, macaws, eagles, parrots, junglefowl, small birds, pelicans, herons, bantams, and peacocks.
According to Rohman, avian vaccinations are routinely conducted once a year using the Newcastle disease vaccine, which is commonly used to prevent the disease. "The vaccines are administered through injection or mixed into their drinking water," he said.
The vaccination included all avian animal keepers and veterinarians, and it was administered in one day last Thursday. Vaccinations for non-avian species were administered at different times. Additionally, cages were cleaned and disinfected. "So far, no animals have died," Rohman stated.
Over the past year, the Bandung Zoo has been closed since August 6, 2025, following an internal management conflict. Then on February 3, 2026, the Ministry of Forestry revoked the conservation institution permit held by Yayasan Margasatwa Tamansari.
Following the management auction conducted by the Bandung City Government, Faunaland was declared the winner on June 10, 2026. The conservation institution and zoo located within the Ecopark area in Ancol, North Jakarta, will manage Bandung Zoo for the next 26 years.
Although the Bandung Zoo is not yet open to the public, its management is obligated to pay an annual contribution of Rp4.3 billion to the Bandung City Government. Bandung Mayor, Muhammad Farhan, stated that there is approximately one year to complete various permits, such as new conservation permits and environmental impact analysis (Amdal) documents. Additionally, other administrative processes, such as building approvals, must also be fulfilled.
According to Farhan, the management must also retain the existing human resources to ensure continued operational sustainability. Furthermore, they are required to maintain the distinctive characteristics of the Bandung Zoo and promote animal release programs as part of conservation efforts, such as releasing gibbons and surilis in the South Bandung region.
