TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Korean drama When Life Gives You Tangerines immediately dominated the Top 10 Netflix Indonesia in the TV Show/Series category just one day after its release, Friday, March 7, 2025. Based on FlixPatrol data, this drama shot to first place, beating the comedy series Culture Shock in second place and the Korean drama The Potato Lab in third place.
When Life Gives You Tangerines' Gradual Release Strategy
Reported from What's on Netflix, the drama starring Park Bo Gum and IU is broadcast globally on Netflix with a gradual release format—four episodes every week. Quoting a report from The Korea Times, this strategy is part of a creative approach that has been developed since the beginning of production. Bae Jong Byung, Senior Director of Netflix's Series Division, emphasized that this weekly release format aims to improve the viewing experience.
He explained that the reason for choosing a release strategy that is in line with the creator's vision to maximize audience enjoyment. “From the beginning, the director and writer envisioned When Life Gives You Tangerines as a story that takes place in four acts, and we wanted the audience to experience it that way,” Bae said.
The drama is directed by Kim Won Suk, while the screenplay is written by Im Sang Choon. When Life Gives You Tangerines also features a dual time setting: Jeju Island in the 1950s and Seoul in 2025.
Love Story on Jeju Island
The drama tells the story of Ae Sun (IU) and Gwan Sik (Park Bo Gum), two young people born in Jeju in the 1950s. Ae Sun is known as a girl who loves books and dreams of becoming a poet. However, her family’s poverty makes it difficult for her to receive a formal education. Even so, she does not give up on pursuing her dream.
Meanwhile, Gwan Sik is a quiet and diligent young man who has had feelings for Ae Sun since childhood. Despite their different personalities, the two embark on a colorful journey through various seasons of their lives.
When Life Gives You Tangerines consists of 16 episodes released in four weeks: March 7 (Episodes 1-4), March 14 (Episodes 5-8), March 21 (Episodes 9-12), March 28 (Episodes 13-16). The combination of emotional stories, Jeju-set cinematography, and the duet of IU and Park Bo Gum seem to be the main attractions of this drama. Since its announcement, this project has been anticipated, especially with the big name of Kim Won Suk who previously directed the dramas My Mister and Signal.
