PDIP Legal Advisor: Hasto Kristiyano's Arrest Treated Like a Terrorism Case

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Legal advisor to the General Secretary of PDIP, Todung Mulya Lubis, considers the response from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the police regarding the case of Hasto Kristiyanto to be excessive.

According to him, during the probing of Hasto Kristiyanto on Thursday, February 20, 2025, the police deployed too many personnel.

"This is an excessive response, Hasto's case is treated like a terrorism case, a major criminal case," Todung said in a press conference at the PDIP central office, Jakarta Pusat, on Thursday night, January 20.

He believes that the police's response assigned to secure the KPK building should have been done in a general manner, without the need to deploy a large number of personnel.

Regarding Hasto's detention by the KPK, Todung stated that the KPK's action showed a lack of compliance with the law. His reason being that Hasto's pretrial motion is underway at the South Jakarta District Court.

"If the KPK is prudent and wise, they could wait to probe (Hasto) after the pretrial process is completed," he said.

Todung believes that the KPK's non-compliance will have a negative impact on the image and public trust in the anti-corruption commission.

"This marks a darker era," said the former Indonesian Ambassador to Norway.

Meanwhile, the KPK officially detained Hasto on Thursday, February 20. He will be held at the Class I Jakarta East detention house, starting from February 20 until March 11, or for 20 days for the purpose of investigation.

Last December 25, the KPK designated Hasto as a suspect in the bribery case involving the KPU commissioner Wahyu Setiawan, which also implicated KPK fugitive Harun Masiku, and in a case of obstructing an investigation.

Hasto had resisted the suspect designation by filing a pretrial motion at the South Jakarta District Court. However, the Panel of Judges at the South Jakarta District Court dismissed the pretrial request due to a lack of sufficient legal clarity.

The Head of the PDIP Legal Reform Division, Ronny Talapessy, considers the detention carried out by the KPK against Hasto to be politically motivated.

He stated that the actions taken by the investigators against Hasto constitute a new phase of the politicization of law aimed at attacking the white-nosed party ahead of the party's congress.

"Mas Hasto was targeted for detention before the party's congress," said Ronny.

He believes that Hasto was targeted for detention before the congress because he is considered to have a significant role within the party. Moreover, Hasto is currently the Secretary General of PDIP.

Ronny believes that the actions taken by KPK were unnecessary since Hasto continues to be cooperative with authorities.

"This is an attempt to destabilize the party before the congress. However, Hasto has been cooperative," he said.
