TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian police have arrested 10 suspects in connection with the fatal beating of a bus driver from West Sumatra, Rahmat Vaisandri, at a shop-house in Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta. Rahmat was assaulted after being accused of stealing a mobile phone belonging to a construction worker of a shop-house project.
"So far, we have detained 10 suspects. We are also pursuing two additional individuals suspected of being involved," said East Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief Commissioner Nicolas Ary Lilipaly during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, February. 3.
Lilipaly detailed the events leading to Rahmat Vaisandri’s death, explaining that the incident began on October 20, 2024, when Rahmat allegedly attempted to steal from the under-construction shop-house in Pasar Rebo.
Upon being caught, police said Rahmat pretended to be asleep to deceive the construction workers. However, they saw through his act and began assaulting him on the second floor of the building. Police reported that Rahmat tried to resist but was eventually overpowered and fell from the second floor.
"The victim fought back, but as he was outnumbered, he attempted to flee and fell from the second floor. His pants got caught on something, and there was a wooden structure below. This account is based on statements from the suspects," Lilipaly explained.
The construction workers later reported the attempted theft to the Pasar Rebo Police Sector. Rahmat was taken to Kramat Jati Police Hospital for intensive care, but a blood clot at the back of his head ultimately proved fatal.
"On Thursday, October 24, 2024, Rahmat was admitted to the hospital. The following day, he was pronounced dead. The Pasar Rebo Police subsequently filed a report requesting an autopsy and launched an investigation into the case," Lilipaly stated.
Lilipaly acknowledged that the identification of suspects in this case took longer than expected. He noted that obtaining statements from the construction workers was difficult, as the shop-house project was halted after the incident.
He claimed that police had been working on the case even before it went viral and became a topic of discussion in the House of Representatives Commission III. He said that authorities initially withheld details of the investigation to prevent the suspects from fleeing.
Rahmat Vaisandri’s death has been widely discussed over the past week. House of Representatives member Andre Rosiade said the victim’s family reported that Rahmat had died under suspicious circumstances in East Jakarta.
The House’s Commission III has since held a public hearing to discuss the case, during which some members recommended the East Jakarta police chief be evaluated for his handling of the investigation.
"Rahmat Vaisandri was assaulted on October 20, 2024, and passed away on October 24, 2024. We, and his family, demand a fair and thorough investigation. A recommendation from Commission III has been issued urging the police chief to be evaluated," Andre said at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday, January 30, as quoted by Antara.
