TEMPO.CO, JakartaPope Francis is battling pneumonia in both lungs. He has been hospitalized since February 14, 2025.

Reported by Reuters, the latest condition of Pope Francis was shared by the Vatican. In a brief statement, the Vatican said that Pope Francis was in stable condition and showed slight improvement in the results of his latest blood tests.

The 88-year-old Pope is undergoing treatment at Rome's Gemelli Hospital. He has been battling shortness of breath for several days. "The clinical condition of the Holy Father is stable," said a brief Vatican statement. "Blood tests show slight improvement, especially in inflammatory markers," the Vatican said.

Double pneumonia is a serious infection that can cause inflammation and scarring in both lungs and make breathing more difficult. The Vatican previously said that the Pope had a polymicrobial infection, which occurs when two or more microorganisms are involved. The Pope will stay in the hospital as long as necessary to deal with the complex clinical situation.

Previously, Pope Francis received a visit from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Pope Francis, according to Meloni, was still conscious and had time to joke with him. "He hasn't lost his sense of humor," said Meloni, the pope's first visitor to the hospital.

A Vatican official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Wednesday that Francis was off the ventilator and breathing on his own. The official said the pope was able to get out of bed and sit in an armchair in his hospital room. He was also still doing some work.

Messages of support for Francis have poured in from around the world, according to official Vatican media reports. Pilgrims at the Vatican on Wednesday expressed hope that Francis would recover soon. "We will pray for him so that he can recover as soon as possible," said Gianfranco Rizzo, a pilgrim from Bari, Italy.

The pope has been plagued by health problems in recent years, including periodic bouts of the flu. He is particularly susceptible to lung infections because he suffered from pleurisy as a young man. Part of one lung had to be removed. All public events have been canceled through Sunday.
