TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto acknowledged that he has received numerous appeals for Indonesia to play a more active role in helping resolve conflicts in the Middle East, particularly in Gaza.
He made this statement ahead of his fifth diplomatic tour to five countries, departing from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta on the morning of Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
"There have been many requests for Indonesia to be more involved in efforts to resolve the conflict in Gaza and the broader Middle East," Prabowo stated.
While Indonesia is geographically distant from the region, Prabowo emphasized that the country holds significance as the world's most populous Muslim nation and a member of the Non-Aligned Movement.
He noted that Indonesia’s active and independent foreign policy is seen as neutral and thus acceptable to the parties involved in the conflict.
"That's why I say that Indonesia is ready if requested by all parties involved to play a role. We are ready to play a role according to Indonesia's capacity and capability," said Prabowo.
Prabowo will visit five countries from April 9-15, 2025. The countries to be visited are the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan.
In addition to discussing current geopolitical and economic conditions, he will also discuss the conflict in the Middle East, particularly in Gaza.
On March 18, Special Envoy of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Al-Habbash handed over a special letter from President Mahmoud Abbas to President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta.
Mahmoud Al-Habbash met with Prabowo for an hour and a half, accompanied by Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia, Zuhair Al-Shun.
"We handed over a special letter from the President of Palestine, President Mahmoud Abbas, to the President of Indonesia regarding the relationship between Indonesia and Palestine, as well as the comprehensive Palestinian issue. Especially the dire situation in Palestine under Israel, under the ongoing Israeli occupation, which happened this morning," stated Mahmoud Al-Habbash following the meeting.
During the meeting, Mahmoud explained the current situation in Gaza to President Prabowo and discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries. He stated that the Palestinian government believes in Indonesia's position in supporting Palestine.
"We believe that the Indonesian government and the people of Indonesia will continue to support the freedom and independence of Palestine," he said.
The letter from the Palestinian President was sent after Israel once again attacked Gaza during a ceasefire. Israel launched air strikes and extensive bombings in the Gaza Strip on March 18, 2025, coinciding with the latter half of Ramadan
Israel's attack marked the resumption of its genocide campaign after a two-month lull.
