TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is convinced that Indonesia's participation in the Board of Peace can influence this U.S.-based international body to achieve an independent Palestine.
Since Indonesia officially joined the BoP on January 22, 2026, various criticisms have emerged from civil society, academics, and Islamic social organizations. Criticisms have intensified after the U.S. and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran, one of the supporters of the Palestinian struggle.
Prabowo reiterated Indonesia's position in a special interview with the international media Bloomberg last weekend. Prabowo believes that Indonesia's participation will help achieve an independent Palestine through a two-state solution.
"If we are part of it (BoP), we can still influence and work towards a long-term solution, which we believe is an independent Palestine, a two-state solution," said Prabowo in Hambalang, West Java, quoted from a statement by the Indonesian Government Communication Bureau on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
However, Prabowo mentioned that the planned deployment of Indonesian troops to the Gaza Strip through the International Stabilization Force (ISF) under the command of the Board of Peace is currently postponed. Additionally, all discussions related to the Board of Peace have been suspended due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
He also emphasized that all parties involved in the conflict must be willing to engage in dialogue. According to Prabowo, this dialogue aims to end the war. "My advice is always to seek peaceful options," said Prabowo.
The geopolitical situation has heated up after the U.S. and Israel suddenly attacked Iran on February 28, 2026. The joint military attack on Iranian airspace caused damage to infrastructure and civilian casualties.
The U.S.-Israel attack also resulted in the deaths of several leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated by deploying missiles and drones to Israeli territory and U.S. military facilities in the Middle East.
The U.S. and Israel initially claimed that the preemptive strike was necessary to counter the perceived threat posed by Iran's nuclear program. However, they later expressed a desire to see a change in Iranian leadership.
