TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto convened a limited meeting with several ministers and high-ranking economic officials at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday afternoon, May 18, 2026. State officials began arriving at the palace grounds starting at 3:30 p.m.
The attendees included Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, and Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia. They were joined by Investment and Industry Minister Rosan Perkasa Roeslani and Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo.
Both Airlangga and Perry remained tight-lipped as they made their way inside. "We shall see the results of the discussions later," Airlangga remarked briefly at the Presidential Palace complex on Monday afternoon.
The meeting took place as the rupiah continued its sharp decline, plunging to Rp17,600 per US dollar. This level marks the currency's weakest position since the depths of the 1997-1998 Asian monetary crisis.
Upon his arrival at the palace, BI Governor Perry Warjiyo declined to comment on the rupiah’s current trajectory. When pressed with questions regarding the exchange rate, Perry offered only a polite word of thanks three times before moving on.
By the close of this evening's trading, the rupiah had weakened further to settle at Rp17,667 per US dollar. The Garuda currency shed 71 points, a drop of approximately 0.40 percent compared to the previous close of Rp17,597 per dollar.
