TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States and Australia will meet in the second Group D match of the 2026 World Cup at Seattle Stadium on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 02:00 AM WIB. The match will be a test for both teams as they look to maintain their perfect start to the tournament.
The United States, also known as the Stars and Stripes, opened their campaign with an impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay. Australia, meanwhile, produced one of the opening-round surprises by defeating Türkiye 2-0 despite spending much of the match under pressure.
USA Carry Attacking Momentum
The United States enter the match with strong confidence after a positive run of results leading into the tournament. Mauricio Pochettino’s side defeated Senegal 3-2 and narrowly lost 2-1 to Germany in their final warm-up matches before making a strong start at the World Cup.
Against Paraguay, the US immediately showed their attacking intent. They took the lead just seven minutes into the match after Damian Bobadilla scored an own goal.
Folarin Balogun then became the standout performer, scoring in the 31st and 50th minutes to become the second US player to score multiple goals in a World Cup match.
Paraguay pulled one back through Mauricio in the 73rd minute, but Giovanni Reyna sealed the victory with a goal in the 98th minute to complete a dominant 4-1 win.
Pochettino will hope his team can maintain the same attacking rhythm against Australia, although he is aware that the Socceroos present a different challenge.
Australia Rely on Defensive Strength
Australia arrived at the World Cup opener as underdogs against Türkiye, one of the teams considered capable of making a deep run in the tournament.
However, Tony Popovic’s team delivered a disciplined performance to secure a 2-0 victory through goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe.
Despite the win, Australia spent much of the match defending. They recorded only 28 percent possession and managed nine shots, compared with Türkiye’s 30 attempts.
Their defensive organization proved decisive, with goalkeeper Patrick Beach producing a standout performance on his competitive debut for the national team. The 22-year-old made eight important saves to keep Australia ahead.
The result gave Australia a major confidence boost ahead of facing the hosts. A victory over the United States would significantly improve their chances of reaching the knockout stage.
However, Australia are expected to face another difficult test against a US side that will likely control possession and apply pressure from the start.
The United States also have the advantage in recent meetings, winning their last two encounters, including a 2-1 victory in October 2025.
Team Conditions Ahead of the Match
The United States are expected to keep the same starting lineup that defeated Paraguay, although Christian Pulisic’s fitness remains a concern.
Pulisic was substituted in the first half of the opening match due to a minor injury. However, both Pochettino and midfielder Tyler Adams said the captain is expected to be available against Australia.
Australia are also likely to maintain the same lineup from their win over Türkiye. Beach is expected to remain in goal, supported by a defensive line featuring Alessandro Circati, Harry Souttar, and Cameron Burgess.
Head-to-Head
The United States and Australia have met four times, all in friendly matches. The US hold the better record with two wins, while Australia have won once. One match ended in a draw.
Their latest meeting came in October 2025, when the United States won 2-1. Australia scored first through Jordan Bos, but the US responded with two goals from Haji Wright.
The United States have qualified for the World Cup 12 times, while Australia are making their seventh appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
Predicted Lineups
United States: Matthew Freese, Alexander Freeman, Chris Richards, Tim Ream, Antonee Robinson, Malik Tillman, Tyler Adams, Sergino Dest, Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic, Folarin Balogun.
Coach: Mauricio Pochettino
Australia: Patrick Beach, Alessandro Circati, Harry Souttar, Jacob Italiano, Jordan Bos, Cameron Burgess, Connor Metcalfe, Aiden O'Neill, Paul Okon-Engstler, Mohamed Toure, Nestory Irankunda.
Coach: Tony Popovic
Match Prediction
The United States showed their attacking quality in their opening match, but Australia will provide a tougher test after demonstrating defensive resilience against Türkiye.
The Socceroos are likely to sit deeper and look for opportunities through quick counterattacks, while the US will try to dominate possession and create chances through their attacking players.
With home support and greater attacking depth, the United States enter the match as favorites. However, Australia’s defensive discipline could make this a much closer contest than their opening performances suggest.
