TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has ordered a new investigation into the disclosure of information regarding Pentagon ammunition stockpiles, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, August 6, citing several sources.
The order for an investigation was prompted by a CNN report stating that the U.S. had used approximately 80 percent of its THAAD missile defense system inventory and about half of its Patriot anti-aircraft missiles, primarily for military operations against Iran.
As quoted by ANTARA, the broadcaster then reported that Trump was furious about the leak of that information to the media.
Earlier, NBC reported that the U.S. Department of Defense would hold an emergency meeting to discuss weapons shortages following an angry phone call from Donald Trump to U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg.
Citing several sources, the report states that the meeting will take place on Friday evening local time and will be attended by high-ranking military officials as well as officials responsible for defense equipment procurement.
Earlier, on June 24, the White House asked the U.S. Congress to provide an additional $87.6 billion in funding, including $67.15 billion for the Pentagon. The majority of the funding package is intended to cover costs associated with U.S. military aggression against Iran.
In late July, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated that the U.S. had expended more than 1,500 Patriot air defense missiles and 200 interceptor missiles for Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) systems.
This situation has left the US facing a significant missile shortage.
