Prabowo Criticizes 'Green-Brown' Officials for Protecting Lawbreakers

4 days ago 33

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has raised concerns about the behavior of officials in the country who often protect perpetrators of legal violations. He mentioned that there are officers in green and brown uniforms, the colors of the army and police, who are backing the embezzlers of national assets.

The Gerindra Party chair expressed his views during a speech at the plenary session of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. In his speech, Prabowo said that those engaged in corruption usually have officials protecting them.

"Usually, they have supporters. Their supporters usually wear green or brown uniforms," Prabowo said during his speech at the MPR/DPR/DPD Building, Jakarta.

Prabowo stated that as a retired army general, he does not want this situation to continue. He stated that he would not hesitate to eradicate corrupt officials. "As a senior, as an Army alumnus, I have no doubts," he said.

The former Minister of Defense conveyed that soldiers and police officers should not tarnish the reputation of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri). "Do not tarnish the TNI-Polri. TNI-Polri belongs to the people, and they must fight for the people," said Prabowo.

He mentioned that the Indonesian people are not foolish. According to Prabowo, society can recognize when officials are aiding lawbreakers.

Prabowo also approved of citizens documenting improper official behavior and reporting it to the President. "If the officials misbehave, I ask the people to record it," he said.

Prabowo attended the DPR plenary session to present the macroeconomic framework and the main points of fiscal policy (KEM-PPKF). Prabowo became the first president to directly present the KEM-PPKF to the parliament.

In his speech, Prabowo aimed for the rupiah exchange rate to be in the range of Rp16,800-17,500 per US dollar in the KEM-PPKF for the 2027 fiscal year. "Our fiscal and monetary strategy must be capable of maintaining our exchange rate's stability against the world's currencies," Prabowo said.

In terms of fiscal policy, the government plans for the state budget deficit in 2027 to be between 1.8 and 2.4 percent of GDP. Considering that the 2025 state budget deficit reached 2.92 percent, 0.8 percent lower than the maximum threshold of 3 percent, this figure reflects the government's strong commitment to continually reducing and minimizing the budget deficit.

Mukhamad Misbakhun, Chair of DPR Commission XI, stated that the macroeconomic framework and main points of fiscal policy are usually presented by the Minister of Finance on behalf of the President. "Today, it was presented directly by the President, marking a new tradition," he said at the DPR complex in Senayan on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
