TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto relayed his ambition for the Indonesian national team to enter the 2026 World Cup. “I am committed. I support our national football. Indonesia must enter the World Cup,” he said while inaugurating the renovation of 17 stadiums across Indonesia on Monday, March 17, 2025. “We are determined.”
The inauguration was centralized at the Gelora Delta Sidoarjo Stadium (GDS), East Java.
Prabowo said football has become a symbol of a modern nation's pride. A great nation, Prabowo said, must have strong mental and physical strength. Only with those features will a nation stand tall and become a great country.
"That's why sports are one of the benchmarks to assess whether a nation is full of spirit or indifferent and easily gives up,” the president said.
The Gerindra Party boss remarked that a football team is not exclusive to wealthy countries, as “poor countries” like those in Africa have World Cup-qualified football teams.
These impoverished countries, Prabowo said, possess a fiery spirit despite less-than-proper training facilities. He also urged the national team to learn from their experiences. "We have to learn," he said.
Prabowo is also striving to push for various policies to advance Indonesian football. “We will streamline all regulations, simplify, and improve the legal instruments. Assist PSSI’s efforts to form a strong national team," he said.
The Indonesian national team currently awaits the next matches for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Indonesia will face Australia, Bahrain, China, and Japan in Group C.
