Prabowo Says Muslim Nations Must Remain Strong to Aid Palestine

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto called for the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to avoid becoming weak nations during an inter-parliamentary conference today. 

"It's impossible to help Palestine if we are weak. Even our voices will not be heard," said Prabowo when attending the 19th Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) Conference at the parliament building, Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday night, May 14, 2025.

The 19th PUIC conference is attended by parliamentary delegations from 37 member countries of the OIC. Approximately 500 delegation members attended, including those from observer countries. The main topic of this conference was 'PUIC Silver Jubilee-Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience.'

Prabowo did not explicitly mention the current condition in Palestine. Despite the ceasefire deal at the beginning of this year, the Israeli onslaught has been renewed in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza. Most recently, Israeli reconnaissance drones attacked an area near Thailan and Palmyra restaurants on al-Wehda Street in Gaza City early Wednesday. The attack killed at least 17 people.

At the OIC conference, Prabowo called for Muslim countries to overcome their internal problems before proceeding to help those in need.

The Indonesian president warned that there may be forces seeking unrest while Islamic countries are weak, despite previously seeking peace.

"Maybe, some parties would think us easy to colonize when we are weak. [That] we can be ordered around as pawns, slaves, and minions," said Prabowo.

House Speaker Puan Maharani, during the same OIC conference, said that Muslim countries and the majority of Muslim populations are showing their role as a group to be reckoned with in the world. "At one point, Islam has the potential to become a new force in the world. We are a civilizational force that emphasizes the unity of the people,' said Puan, as quoted from the official statement.

Puan mentioned the Medina Charter, which emphasizes the respect Islam has for diversity and pluralism. The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician stated that Muslim countries must navigate various grips of global political interests.

The daughter of former President Megawati Soekarnoputri also called for Muslim countries to forge solidarity within OIC member states.
