TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Prabowo Subianto signed Government Regulation on the Governance of the Implementation of Electronic Systems in Child Protection at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, March 28, 2025.

Prabowo immediately approved all suggestions in the drafting of this regulation, stating that major nations already have regulations in place to promote child protection.

He emphasized the importance of this regulation, citing the double-edged nature of digital technology. On the one hand, digital technology brings rapid progress for humanity, but on the other, unsupervised access to the internet can damage children’s character or psychology.

"If we don’t take appropriate measures, the rapid negative progression through digital media is quite dangerous,” he said.

The Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid stated that the idea of a regulation aimed at protecting children in the digital spaces actually began from Indonesia's commitment in the G20 Summit during the previous presidency. The issuance of Law Number 1 of 2024 Concerning Electronic Information and Transactions, became the main legal umbrella for this regulation.

The ministry proposed the initiative for the regulation to President Prabowo on January 13, 2025. Upon Prabowo’s approval, the ministry immediately held public consultations, gathering 287 inputs and responses from 24 stakeholders. In addition, the process also involved hundreds of domestic and foreign agencies.

"We have conducted seven Focused Group Discussions (FGDs) attended by representatives from cross-ministerial government agencies, academics, non-governmental organizations, and experts. During the discussions, inter-ministerial coordination committees were expanded to ensure policy coherence," she said.
