TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung unveiled plans to create a cat island in Jakarta, specifically on one of the islands in the Thousand Islands region.
He explained that the concept is not entirely new, as similar cat islands already exist in other countries. "In Japan, such islands have already been established," he stated at Jakarta City Hall on Thursday, March 13, 2025.
Pramono believes the cat island could become a popular tourist attraction for both locals and visitors, considering the large number of cat lovers, especially in Jakarta.
"People can visit and enjoy cat tourism," he told the media.
Pramono himself ensured that he would be serious in realizing the idea of the cat island. One of the reasons is because Pramono believes there is significant potential from the development of the cat island for the regional economy.
"If we can realize it later, it could also become revenue for the Thousand Islands government," said the PDIP politician.
In addition to being a tourist destination, the cat island will also be used as a cat rehabilitation center. There, a special cat hospital with standard treatment will be built.
Pramono recently received an award from the Indonesian World Record Museum (MURI) for the Jakarta Provincial Government’s achievement in conducting the highest number of cat sterilizations. In February, the government successfully sterilized 1,000 cats.
"We have reached a thousand, and hopefully, this year we can achieve 21,000," Pramono stated.
The cat island Pramono referred to in Japan is Aoshima, located in Ehime Prefecture. It can be reached from Tokyo by train and ferry, with a journey taking several hours.
Unfortunately, the cat population on the island is expected to decline in the coming years.
The concern for the extinction of these cats was announced in a Tweet by @aoshima_cat quoted by Japan Today on Thursday, September 26, 2024. In a post titled "The Future of Cat Island", it was mentioned that the number of cats is gradually decreasing.
"Since the sterilization and neutering conducted in October 2018, no kittens have been born. We think these cats will cross the rainbow bridge (die) in a few years," the post read.
