TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto summoned Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo to the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. He requested that Minister AHY and Dody present a comprehensive concept for national waste management.
Agus Harimurti, commonly known as AHY, emphasized that society frequently faces waste-related issues. He stated that waste has become a fundamental problem that requires immediate attention. "So, for this solution, we certainly need directive guidance from Pak President," Minister AHY said after the meeting.
The Chairperson of the Democratic Party highlighted the crucial role of infrastructure in effective waste management. He also stressed the necessity of implementing advanced technology in waste management practices. This technology is essential for reducing waste at every stage, from its source to the final disposal site. "It can be reduced from its source, household and industrial waste to the final disposal site," he elaborated.
Furthermore, Minister AHY expressed hope that existing technologies can be used to convert waste into electricity. This initiative is vital for achieving sustainable development. "The infrastructure approach is also for environmental sustainability. This has become the concern and priority of Pak President," he stated.
AHY noted that the planned national waste management strategy is also closely linked to recent flood disasters. Floods, he pointed out, are inextricably connected to environmental conditions and public awareness. Therefore, fostering public awareness regarding environmental preservation is equally important.
"We also have to ensure that regions, as the forefront of waste management, also prepare waste disposal sites and final disposal sites to destroy the waste," he said.
Prior to this meeting, President Prabowo summoned a youth group known as the Pandawara Group to the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. The group intends to launch a national movement aimed at addressing the waste problem across Indonesia. Pandawara Group member Gilang Rahma explained that the movement plans to collaborate with the government.
"So, there is a massive-scale activity aimed at addressing the waste problem from upstream to downstream," Gilang said after the meeting with President Prabowo at the Presidential Palace Complex, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. Gilang asserted that President Prabowo will provide support for the movement, as the waste problem has escalated into a national issue.
In recent times, floods have severely impacted the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek or Greater Jakarta) areas. Associate Researcher from the Center for Limnology and Water Resources Research at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Yus Budiono, identified four primary factors contributing to these floods: land subsidence, land use changes, rising sea levels, and extreme weather phenomena.
