TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Press Council launched official guidelines for using artificial intelligence (Al) in the production process of journalistic works on Friday, January 24, 2025.
Press Council Chairwoman Ninik Rahayu said the guidelines ensure that Al technology is used ethically, transparently, and does not compromise journalistic integrity amid rapid technological advances.
"This morning, the Press Council officially released Press Council Regulation Number 1 Year 2025. In full, it is Press Council Regulation 1/Peraturan DP/I/2025 on Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Journalistic Works," Ninik said in a press conference at the Press Council Building, Jakarta, Friday.
These guidelines, said Ninik, are an important part of the pre-existing journalistic code of ethics. "So we are not changing the journalistic code of ethics, but this is a complement to keep up with technological developments, including artificial technology that has colored our news system and press system," she said.
According to him, the process of preparing these guidelines has involved all constituents of the Press Council since April 2024 through discussions and the presence of various sources, including elements of universities, platform elements, experts in the field of AI, and elements of media activists who have independently compiled artificial intelligence guidelines.
In addition, these guidelines have also undergone a public test involving stakeholders, including the Supreme Court. "All members of the press have awaited this guideline. Hopefully, through these guidelines, using artificial intelligence technology in journalism will help speed up the journalistic process and improve work efficiency," said Ninik. "However, strict control and ethical principles are still needed so that Al does not damage the fundamental values of journalism, such as accuracy, fairness and independence."
The guidelines comprise 8 chapters and 10 articles, including general provisions, basic principles, technology, publication, commercialization, protection, dispute resolution, and closing provisions. This regulation was signed by the Chairman of the Press Council, Ninik Rahayu on January 22, 2025.
