TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has warned that an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities could contaminate the water in the gulf region and threaten the lives of the people in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.
Geographically, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait face Iran across the Gulf. In the gulf area, there are natural water reserves and it is home to more than 18 million people, whose only water supply comes from the Gulf.
Sheikh Mohammed warned an attack on Iran's nuclear would leave the Gulf with "no water, no fish, nothing ... no life", as quoted from Reuters.
U.S. President Donald Trump said his administration wants to negotiate a nuclear deal with Iran and has suggested that both countries engage in dialogue.
Trump also emphasized that he would apply tremendous pressure, as was imposed during his first term in office, to isolate Iran from the global economy and push Iran's oil exports to zero.
Sheikh Mohammed urged for a diplomatic solution to avoid military attacks on Iran that could lead to war, which could have regional implications.
"There is no way that Qatar would support any kind of military step ... we will not give up until we see a diplomatic solution," said Sheikh Mohammed in an interview published on Friday, March 7, 2025.
Iran denies that it is developing nuclear weapons. Iran's top leader stated last Saturday that they would not be oppressed through a series of negotiations.
Russia has offered to mediate between the United States and Iran, according to a source briefed on the discussions, speaking to Reuters on Tuesday. The Kremlin pledged to do everything possible to facilitate a peaceful solution to the tensions over Tehran's nuclear program.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov discussed international efforts to resolve the situation regarding Iran's nuclear program with Iranian Ambassador Kazem Jalali, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
