TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Agency for Development Control and Special Investigation (Bappisus), Aris Marsudiyanto, mentioned that the Republic of Indonesia University will focus on STEM education. President Prabowo Subianto recently announced the establishment of this educational institution yesterday.
"One of the focuses is on STEM, but there will certainly be many other study programs. For example, in the field of health, medicine," said Aris at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
Aris stated that Prabowo pays attention to preparing superior human resources to face Gold Indonesia 2045. Aris believes that Indonesia has abundant natural resources but still lags in technology. Therefore, the government is pushing for strengthening education in the STEM sector.
"It is impossible for us to have such abundant natural resources, but low human resources. It is clear that we have all kinds of natural resources, but until now we are lagging in technology," Aris said.
Therefore, Aris emphasizes that Prabowo focuses on promoting STEM education. This way, the Indonesian nation can master its own technology in the future.
However, Aris stated that the Republic of Indonesia University will not only focus on study programs in the field of science and technology. Through this institution, the government will also strengthen the health sector, including medical education. "Health and medicine also need to be enhanced because they are currently very lacking," said Aris.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa mentioned that the funding for the Republic of Indonesia University will be related to the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology. However, he could not confirm the financing scheme, including whether all of the funds will come from the state revenue and expenditure budget (APBN).
"URI (Republic of Indonesia University) will later receive part of the funding, I don't know. We will check again. If I'm not mistaken, there is a connection with the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education," said Purbaya.
On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, President Prabowo inaugurated Deputy Defense Minister Donny Ermawan Taufanto as the Governor of the Republic of Indonesia University.
Donny's inauguration took place at the State Palace in Jakarta. The procession was held simultaneously with the inauguration of Yos Sunitiyoso, a business professor from the Bandung Institute of Technology, as the vice-governor.
After the inauguration, Donny stated that the Republic of Indonesia University is a new institution. This campus is specifically created to educate future government officials and state-owned enterprise (SOE) leaders. "The President is very concerned about human resources, especially for Indonesia's future leaders," he said on Wednesday.
According to Donny, the Republic of Indonesia University plans to establish ten campuses. Its graduates will receive degrees similar to other universities. "There will be doctors, bachelors, engineers, and various other disciplines. Many," he said.
