TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has responded to the rupiah depreciation, which has currently tumbled to Rp18,000 per US dollar. He acknowledged that the weakening currency will inflate the burden of the government’s debt.
However, Purbaya noted that the coupons on government bonds, or their fixed-rate yields, remain constant. "This is still within our previous calculations," he told reporters when met at the House of Representatives (DPR) building on Thursday, June 4, 2026.
The state treasurer explained that his ministry had already run simulations for when the price of crude oil rises. For context, the macro assumption for the exchange rate anchored in the 2026 State Budget was set at Rp16,500 per US dollar.
Even so, Purbaya declined to disclose the level of the rupiah used in those emergency simulations. "The adjustment is quite high, but I won't mention it, as [speculating] could trigger further significant weakening of the rupiah. Fundamentally, however, the value of the rupiah sits below this current level, stronger than it is today," he stated.
The former chairperson of the Deposit Insurance Agency (LPS) board also revealed that the Ministry of Finance has allocated Rp8 trillion for market stabilization maneuvers. This intervention framework involves repurchasing government bonds (SBN) sold by fleeing investors, a strategy he claims has successfully stabilized the benchmark 10-year SBN yields.
During Thursday morning trading, the rupiah found itself under renewed pressure, shedding 0.27 percent to breach Rp18,015 per US dollar. This downturn marks one of the weakest valuation levels for the local currency in recent history, dragging it past a highly sensitive psychological barrier of Rp18,000 per US dollar.
Lukman Leong, a currency analyst at Doo Financial Futures, noted that the slide mirrors heavy external pressure amid mounting global uncertainty, which is amplified by sluggish sentiment on the home front. "The rupiah is expected to weaken against a strengthening US dollar as geopolitical tensions escalate in the Middle East," he said, as quoted by news agency Antara.
