TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah exchange rate on Tuesday morning weakened by 61 points or 0.34 percent to Rp18,070 per US dollar compared to the previous day's closing at Rp18,009 per US dollar.

Bank Woori Saudara analyst, Rully Nova, stated that the rupiah weakened in line with cautious market players' attitude towards Bank Indonesia's (BI) policy direction under the new Governor.

"The rupiah in today's trading is estimated to weaken in the range of Rp18,000-Rp 18,050 per US dollar, influenced by domestic factors and cautious market players' attitude towards Bank Indonesia's policy direction under the new Governor," Rully said to Antara in Jakarta, Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

As is known, Destry Damayanti, the BI Senior Deputy Governor, has been appointed interim Governor of BI following Perry Warjiyo's resignation.

Subsequently, the government will issue a Presidential Decision (Keppres) regarding the honorable dismissal of Perry Warjiyo from the position of BI Governor. After this administrative stage, the process of replacing the BI Governor enters a transition period before the President proposes a new definitive candidate to the House of Representatives (DPR).

According to the Bank Indonesia Law, the President nominates the new BI Governor and submits the nomination to the DPR. Subsequently, the DPR's Commission XI will perform a fit-and-proper test before granting official approval.

Once approved by the DPR, the candidate will be determined and inaugurated by the President as the definitive BI Governor.

"The new BI Governor needs to prioritize strengthening the institution, especially operational monetary policies that affect the money supply and inflation expectations, where BI should not directly purchase government bonds in the primary market," said Rully.

Global sentiment is quite positive, as the US dollar index has stabilized and oil prices have declined amid the lull in conflict between the U.S. and Iran.

Citing Anadolu, U.S. President Donald Trump instructed the suspension of further attacks on Iran, ending the 13-day consecutive attacks.

Iran stated that they are not currently in talks with the U.S. and that any future negotiations would depend on Washington changing its attitude. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei denied reports that Tehran had requested talks with the U.S.
