TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The heads of the U.S. and Russian spy agencies spoke on the phone for the first time in three years. They agreed to continue regular contact to reduce the temperature of U.S.-Russia relations, as reported on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
CIA Director CIA John Ratcliffe and the head of the Russian external intelligence agency SVR, Sergey Naryshkin, spoke on the phone on Tuesday, according to the state news agency TASS as quoted by Al Arabiya.
They "agreed on regular contact" between their agencies “in order to contribute to the international stability and security, as well as a decrease in confrontation in relations between Moscow and Washington."
The phone call marks the first contact since U.S. President Donald Trump took office with a promise to end the three-year conflict in Ukraine.
The contact occurred on the same day when Ukraine supported the U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire and agreed to immediate negotiations with Russia in crucial talks in Saudi Arabia.
The last reported contact between the CIA director and SVR occurred in November 2022, when Naryshkin spoke to the then CIA director William Burns in Ankara.
