TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - When an aircraft makes an emergency landing, flight attendants will instruct passengers to evacuate within 90 seconds or 1.5 minutes. Any bags, suitcases, or backpacks within the cabin must be left behind, even if they contain valuable items. Every second counts, as lives are at stake.
Leanna Coy, a flight attendant living in Connecticut, warns passengers not to bring any bags during an aircraft evacuation. In an informative video that went viral on TikTok, quoted by the New York Post on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, Coy explained that flight attendants are trained to evacuate an aircraft within 90 seconds.
She shared important information regarding what can and can't be done related to air passenger safety after the Delta Airlines accident at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Canada, on February 17. Terrifying footage of the emergency evacuation showed airline staff leading passengers out of the burning and overturned aircraft before it came to a stop.
Coy added that 90 seconds is the estimated time frame for evacuating an aircraft. Passengers may think they have a few extra seconds to grab these items before exiting. However, Coy stressed that the risk is too high.
Procedure for Exiting the Aircraft
Coy emphasized that getting off the aircraft during an emergency landing is a time-sensitive procedure, requiring full compliance. Coy outlined the steps passengers should follow.
She explained that flight attendants are responsible for opening all aircraft doors. Then, they will start shouting instructions roughly, such as, 'Leave everything! Come here! Jump!'.
If passengers fail to comply with the flight attendants' orders, the consequences could be fatal, especially for the flight attendants. Flight attendants are not allowed to leave the aircraft until all passengers have safely exited.
What About Vital Medications?
Many expressed disagreement with Coy's post, especially those traveling with life-saving medications in their bags. However, regardless of the reason, Coy reminded everyone that it is better to lose medications than to lose their lives.
Outside of the strict evacuation time limit, airline personnel warn that certain carry-on items can jeopardize everyone's chances of escaping safely.
Coy mentioned the emergency exit slide. Passengers should leave their bags because the slide is being inflated. The slide can burst if passengers are carrying a wheeled bag.
If the slide bursts and deflates, people cannot pass through it safely, thus endangering their safety. Therefore, it is essential to just follow the flight attendants' instructions during an evacuation.
