TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korea has suspended the download of AI-based chatbot DeepSeek from the local App Store and Google Play. This decision was made after the Chinese company admitted to failing to comply with personal data protection regulations.
The South Korean Personal Information Protection Commission stated that DeepSeek had received a proposal to suspend the download of their application. However, users who previously downloaded the service will still have access to it.
"To prevent further concerns from spreading, the commission recommended that DeepSeek temporarily suspend its service while making the necessary improvements," the commission said, quoted from Aljazeera, Wednesday, February 19, 2025. They also emphasized that adjusting the application to local regulations will take quite some time.
This decision follows the South Korean government's previous temporary ban on using DeepSeek by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy employees for security reasons.
Besides South Korea, several other countries such as Australia and Taiwan have banned using this chatbot on government devices. Meanwhile, the United States Congress is considering a bill to enforce a similar ban.
The Italian data protection authority has also taken a step by ordering DeepSeek to limit the processing of Italian user data until further information about data management is available.
DeepSeek came under scrutiny after claiming to have developed its chatbot at a much lower cost than major technology companies such as Google and OpenAI. This claim has sparked skepticism in the industry, with some suspecting that the company has access to greater resources than they admit.
