'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Shatters Box Office Records

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day continued its dominant streak at the global box office, pulling in US$145 million domestically and US$381 million overseas in its second weekend to push its worldwide total to US$1.67 billion.

According to The Wrap, the web-slinging sequel reached US$655 million in North America after just 10 days, making it the highest-grossing film in domestic history over that timeframe before adjusting for inflation. Industry analysts project that the blockbuster is on track to become the first film to hit US$1 billion domestically before inflation adjustment, threatening the all-time record of US$936 million held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige credited the character's long-standing connection with audiences and Tom Holland's performance for driving these historic numbers. "People can write about changing tastes, but as characters that grow and evolve through the decades, there are none better than the Marvel characters — and none better than Peter Parker. When you find an actor like Tom Holland to bring that character to life, it is the magic formula," Feige told Variety.

Trail of Box Office Records Broken by "Spider-Man: Brand New Day"

As reported by Yahoo, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has rewritten the box office record books across several categories since its release:

Domestic Opening: Claimed the largest domestic opening weekend in history with US$360 million, surpassing Avengers: Endgame.

Single-Day Highs: Delivered the biggest opening day ever (US$169 million), as well as record-setting Monday (US$46 million) and Tuesday (US$42 million) domestic hauls.

Speed Records: Became the fastest film to reach US$250 million and $500 million domestically, crossing the half-billion mark in just seven days.

Global Pace: Reached US$1 billion worldwide in six days, marking the second-fastest film to achieve the milestone behind Endgame.

Internationally, the film generated US$186 million in China and US$52.8 million in India, becoming the highest-grossing Hollywood release of all time in India. The film also logged record opening weekends across more than a dozen territories, including France, Brazil, Spain, and Saudi Arabia.

At its current trajectory, industry monitors estimate the picture will cross the US$2.5 billion threshold before the end of its theatrical run.

Strong Performances Across the Board

In the wake of Spider-Man's historic run, Universal and Syncopy’s The Odyssey held strong in second place, adding US$31.5 million domestically to reach US$461 million in North America and $1.1 billion worldwide. The Wrap noted that this cements The Odyssey as director Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film of all time before inflation adjustment, surpassing 2012's The Dark Knight Rises.

The film’s success has been heavily bolstered by large-format screens, with Imax screenings generating US$289 million globally. The historical epic also set a personal record for Nolan in South Korea, where it opened to US$14.5 million, his highest launch ever in the market.

Among other weekend contenders, Universal’s romantic comedy One Night Only, directed by Will Gluck, opened in third place with US$5.7 million from 3,012 theaters. Searchlight’s Super Troopers 3 landed in fourth with US$4 million, narrowly ahead of Pixar's Toy Story 5, which brought in US$3.9 million in its eighth frame to reach US$1.09 billion globally. Meanwhile, Eli Roth’s self-distributed horror feature Ice Cream Man posted US$2 million against a modest US$5.5 million budget.

Film Industry Resurgence

The arrival of multiple billion-dollar hits in 2026, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Michael, marks the strongest box office recovery since 2019.

"The billion-dollar club has always been treated as a special box office milestone. It's also one that's become more challenging to achieve since the pandemic," Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, told CNBC.

Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak, highlighted the broader importance of the season's momentum to Yahoo: "The summer box office is incredibly important. It's vitally important in terms of what the overall health of the industry looks like and what that portends for the entire year."
