TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tempo's investigative team has won the 2024 Adinegoro Journalism Award in the print coverage category, presented by the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI). Their winning report, titled Professorship for Sale (Skandal Guru Besar Abal-Abal), exposed fraudulent practices in professorship applications at several universities.
“This is not only a victory for the investigative team, but a victory for the entire Tempo team. This award is a motivation for us to keep working," said Praga Utama, a Tempo investigative journalist, at the 2024 Adinegoro Journalism Award ceremony at the Radio Republik Indonesia Building in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
The Professorship for Sale report was published in Tempo Magazine’s July 8, 2024 edition, and its Indonesian version in Majalah Tempo’s July 7, 2024 edition. The report was the result of collaborative work by Praga Utama, Raymundus Rikang, Yosea Arga Pramudita, and Sunudyantoro.
The report detailed how thousands of lecturers, including politicians and state officials, applied for professorships through various universities across the country.
Tempo's investigation revealed that many applicants used predatory journals and manipulated requirements to secure the title. This system was facilitated by a network within the Ministry of Education and a network of predatory journal providers who published the work of prospective professors. Following the investigation, the Ministry of Education deactivated dozens of assessors or evaluators of professorship applications.
