TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - TikTok faces a potential permanent ban in the United States for data security and national security reasons. In response to the security issue, TikTok has stated that it has established a subsidiary, TikTok U.S. Data Security Inc., to protect user data in the country.
"We’ve voluntarily implemented technical and operational safeguards to address national security concerns while enhancing transparency," TikTok wrote on its official website on Saturday, February 8, 2025.
TikTok explained that the company is managed by over 2,000 employees based in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia to support round-the-clock protection. TikTok U.S. Data Security controls access to protected user data, content recommendations, and moderation systems on Oracle Cloud, which is claimed to be secure.
According to TikTok, this structure provides a higher focus and governance on TikTok's operations in the United States, including data protection policies and content assurance protocols to safeguard user security and their data, allowing users to have an authentic experience on TikTok.
"Protected U.S. user data is stored by default in Oracle Cloud with controlled and monitored gateways. Only approved USDS personnel have access to protected U.S. user data on Oracle Cloud," TikTok wrote.
TikTok provides access to Dedicated Transparency Centers (DTC) to third parties, such as Oracle and Independent Security Inspectors, to the complete source code of TikTok, including algorithms that support TikTok's recommendation system.
Oracle and Independent Security Inspectors have continuous access to analyze and validate source code, including mobile application code, backend services, third-party libraries, and recommendation algorithms. "This began with the first DTC which was launched two years ago in Columbia, Maryland, where Oracle still sits and analyzes code today," TikTok stated.
TikTok claims that the DTC provides security for these third parties. Oracle and Independent Security Inspectors can manually examine the TikTok platform.
After collaborating with Oracle, TikTok claims their access has never been disrupted for two years. The third parties involved are stated as evidence of transparency for auditing and as a form of accountability. "TikTok has gone further than any other platform in protecting U.S. user data," TikTok wrote.
