1. Extreme Rainfall Triggers Floods in Jakarta During Chinese New Year, Data Shows
Rainy weather during the Chinese New Year is a common occurrence, as the holiday precedes spring in China, which coincides with the rainy season in Indonesia.
However, what happened on the last Chinese New Year on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, was that the rain caused widespread flooding in Jakarta. Besides the changes in surface conditions and drainage, BMKG revealed that the rain was extensive and its intensity reached extreme levels.
2. Indonesia Plans New Nuclear Power Plants with 4.3 GW Capacity in Bid for Cleaner Energy
Fossil fuel-dependent Indonesia plans to build nuclear power plants with the capacity of about 4 gigawatts (GW) in a bid for cleaner energy, an adviser to President Prabowo Subianto said on Friday.
Indonesia's current installed power capacity is more than 90 GW, with more than half of that powered by coal and less than 15% by renewables. It currently has no nuclear capacity, a controversial topic in a country prone to earthquakes.
3. Gus Dur Deserves National Hero Title for Establishing Chinese New Year as Public Holiday, PKB Says
The Chair of the National Awakening Party (PKB) faction in the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Neng Eem Marhamah Zulfa, said that Indonesia’s 4th President, Abdurrahman Wahid, also known as Gus Dur, deserves the title of national hero for his efforts to establish Chinese New Year as a public holiday.
At that time, she said, Gus Dur issued Presidential Decree (Keppres) No. 6 of 2000, which withdrew a Presidential Instruction from Indonesia’s 2nd President, Soeharto, regarding Religion, Beliefs, and Chinese Customs, one of which prohibited the celebration of Chinese New Year.
