Trump Mandates Registration for Canadians in the U.S.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Donald Trump will impose a new rule requiring Canadian residents in the United States to register with federal authorities if they stay for more than 30 days, as reported on Tuesday.

Until now, Canadian residents crossing the land border into the U.S. have not been required to register.

However, according to a report by Anadolu, the rule can be unilaterally changed by the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security.

The changes will be officially announced in the federal regulation list on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

The registration and fingerprinting requirement for Canadian residents staying in the U.S. for more than 30 days will be effective on April 11, 2025.

Those already in the U.S. will be asked to complete a new form, G-325R.

These changes may impact certain Canadian residents who stay in the warmer U.S. states during the winter months, such as retirees, who may now need to register with the U.S. government or face penalties.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced last month their plan to "fully enforce" the Immigration and Nationality Act as part of efforts to "track down illegal immigrants and force them to voluntarily leave the country."

The law, which was previously not fully enforced, mandates that foreign nationals over 14 years old must register and be fingerprinted within 30 days of entry and that all registered foreign nationals over 18 years old must carry proof of registration at all times.

Trump issued an executive order on his first day in office directing DHS to ensure that undocumented individuals register with the government in compliance with the law.

DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin stated in February, that the Trump administration will enforce all of our immigration laws. The state must know who is in the country for homeland security and the safety of American citizens.

This policy is implemented amidst escalating trade tensions between the two countries. Previously, Trump imposed import tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, prompting various retaliatory actions from Ottawa.

Canada responded by applying a 25 percent tax on electricity exports to the U.S. after Trump doubled the tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum.

However, tensions between the two countries eased after Trump and Ontario reversed their decisions on Tuesday.

Trump's broader global tariff policies had shaken global financial markets. Investors are concerned that the policies could lead the U.S. into a recession.

The Dow Jones index fell by about 7.5 percent last month, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq index plummeted by more than 11.5 percent.
