TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump's criticism of Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, continues. He accused Zelensky of taking aid money from the United States, "like candy from a baby", during the era of former President Joe Biden.
"He took money out of this country, under Biden, like candy from a baby. It was so easy," said Trump in an interview with Fox News broadcasted on Sunday, as quoted by Anadolu.
"I just don’t think he’s grateful. We gave him 350 billion and he is talking about the fact that they have fought and they have this bravery," said Trump, reiterating his criticism following the dispute in the Oval Office with Zelensky last month.
Trump reaffirmed that he was the one who provided the Ukrainian military with Javelin anti-tank weapons and that the war in Ukraine would not have occurred if he were the president in 2022, when it began.
Regarding the aid from the U.S. and Europe to Ukraine, he said, "All he (Zelenskyy) had to do is say (to Europe), you got to stay even with us (the US) ... We're not in the danger, they (Europe) are ...So they're paying all this money to Russia, and we're in there for $350 billion.”
In recent weeks, several European leaders, including Britain and France, told Trump the aid figures were wrong. They affirmed that collectively Europe has sent more money to Ukraine than the U.S.
When asked if the U.S. treats Ukraine and Israel in the same way, Trump said, "They're very different places, okay, very, very different. You're talking about different levels of power.”
The tense relationship between Trump and Zelensky escalated last month when Trump accused Zelensky of prolonging the war in Ukraine and being ungrateful for U.S. aid. During a heated Oval Office meeting, Trump criticized Zelensky and then suspended all military aid to Ukraine, pressuring Kyiv to negotiate with Russia.
The move triggered reactions from European allies, while Russia welcomed the decision, further straining U.S.-Ukraine relations.
