TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of the United States, Donald Trump, intends to turn the Gaza Strip into a world tourist site. He said this after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
Trump announced that the U.S. would take over and run Gaza, which will likely continue for some time to come.
"Everybody I've spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land, developing and creating thousands of jobs with something that will be magnificent," Trump told reporters after a three-hour meeting with Netanyahu.
Palestinian Residents Evacuated
On Thursday, February 6, 2025, Trump claimed that Israel would hand over Gaza to the United States after the war ended. The Palestinians will be relocated elsewhere, so according to Trump, there will be no need for American forces in the field anymore.
Trump clarified his plans in comments on his Truth Social web platform. He had acknowledged the possibility of American forces being deployed to Gaza. "The Gaza Strip would be turned over to the United States by Israel at the conclusion of fighting," he said, as quoted by Reuters on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
Trump insisted that the Palestinians have no alternative but to leave Gaza and go somewhere "good, fresh, beautiful" with no prospect of returning, and once again asked Jordan and Egypt to accept the forcibly displaced Palestinians, along with other unnamed countries.
Calls Gaza Unsafe for Habitation
Gaza, Trump said, is a "a demolition site. Virtually every building is down. They're living under fallen concrete."
"They instead can occupy all of a beautiful area with homes and safety, and they can live out their lives in peace and harmony, instead of having to go back and do it again," he added.
The president did not rule out the use of U.S. forces for the mission, adding that only U.S. control can bring "great stability to the Middle East."
"The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too. We'll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site."
Projected for the World's People
When asked who he envisions living in Gaza, Trump said, "The world's people."
"I think we’ll make that into an international, unbelievable place. I think the potential in the Gaza Strip is unbelievable," he said. "And I think the entire world… will be there, and they'll live there. Palestinians, also. Palestinians will live there."
When further pressed, Trump said "mostly Palestinians" will live there, but when asked if Palestinians will be able to return to Gaza under his plan, he remained non-committal.
Involve Military Forces
In efforts to reconstruct Gaza, the White House stated that Donald Trump will not simply allocate funds. Trump is said to continue sending American forces to Gaza. He said Trump wants to maintain that influence in negotiations.
However, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted that Trump's proposal is not an effort to create conflict. "What he’s very generously has offered is the ability of the United States to go in and help with debris removal, help with munitions removal, help with reconstruction, the rebuilding homes and businesses and things of this nature so that then people can move back in," said Rubio.
