TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday, August 19, announced what he called "the most crushing economic operation ever undertaken against any country."
"This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale," Trump wrote in Truth Social, accusing Iran of failing to seize the opportunity to reach a deal, as quoted by ANTARA.
"Their navy is gone, their air force is destroyed, their military factories are now rubble, their currency is worthless, and their country is hanging by a thread," he said.
Trump added that any country allowing its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any form of assistance to Iran would face severe economic consequences.
Calling the move “ECONOMIC D-DAY,” he urged allies to support the U.S. in isolating and defeating the Iranian threat.
The U.S. and Iran remain at odds over the Strait of Hormuz and the terms for ending the conflict, with the future of talks uncertain after the 60-day negotiating period set out under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) ended on Monday.
