TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have reaffirmed their shared commitment to the denuclearization of North Korea (DPRK). This breakthrough was detailed in an official fact sheet released by the White House on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
In addition to the North Korean issue, the document, which is the result of a two-day summit in Beijing last weekend, also outlines a joint opposition to the imposition of tariffs in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Washington, as reported by Kyodo and cited by Antara, Beijing has pledged to address American concerns regarding rare earth metal supply chain shortages. This cooperation extends to other critical minerals, the sale of specialized production technology, and the processing of rare earth materials.
Notably, the document omits any mention of the Taiwan issue, despite President Xi’s warning during the summit that the handling of the self-governed island remains a potential flashpoint for conflict between the world’s two preeminent powers.
Addressing the ongoing conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, the fact sheet notes that Trump and Xi agreed that Tehran must not acquire nuclear weapons. They further concurred that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open, insisting that no nation or organization should levy tariffs along that vital maritime route.
In the economic field, China has committed to purchasing $17 billion worth (around Rp300 trillion) of U.S. agricultural products annually through 2028. This move builds upon the soybean purchase agreements established in October 2025.
Beijing has also finalized an initial order for 200 Boeing aircraft to bolster Chinese commercial fleets.
To streamline bilateral economic ties, the U.S. and China have established two new bodies: the Trade Council and the Investment Council.
The Trade Council is designed to help both governments manage the exchange of non-sensitive goods, while the Investment Council will act as a formal government-to-government forum for resolving investment-related disputes.
This summit follows a trade war ceasefire agreed upon in South Korea in October 2025, which helped de-escalate tensions after both nations had previously slapped one another with triple-digit tariff hikes.
That earlier agreement also included a moratorium on China’s new export controls for critical rare earth minerals essential for high-tech manufacturing, alongside Beijing’s pledge to purchase at least 25 million tons of U.S. soybeans annually through 2028.
