TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto claimed that the U.S. government appreciates Indonesia’s import tariffs’ negotiation proposal. He reported the progress to President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, April 28, 2025, upon returning from a visit to the United States.
Airlangga mentioned that Trump’s administration considers Indonesia’s proposal to be quite comprehensive. The letters dated Monday, April 7, and Wednesday, April 9, discussed not only tariffs, but also non-tariff matters. "Also about Indonesia's plan on the balance of trade," said Airlangga in a virtual press conference.
The minister divulged that the Indonesian delegation met with several parties, including the US Trade Representative, Secretary of Commerce, Secretary of Treasury, Director of the National Economic Council, and delegations from several other countries.
In addition, Airlangga held a virtual meeting with the Foreign Minister of Australia, the Minister of Trade and Industry of South Korea, the Semiconductor Industry Association, the United States-ASEAN Business Council, and the United States-Indonesia Industry Society.
There were also representatives from several business giants, such as the Asia Group, Amazon, Boeing, Microsoft, and Google.
Airlangga referred to Indonesia’s proposal as "fair and square." "Their trade balance is around 19, we offer more than 19.5. Direct sales are 19.5, but we also have some projects that we will purchase from America," said the former Chairman of the Golkar Party.
The U.S.-Indonesia tariff negotiation, Airlangga said, aims for a win-win solution, as per Prabowo Subianto’s directive.
According to him, the Indonesian government’s policy does not discriminate between countries. "Geopolitically, of course, Indonesia is considered of value by America," he said.
Before this, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Friday, April 25, 2025, and attended a meeting with the ASEAN Central Bank Governors and the Managing Director of the IMF to discuss the broader impact of U.S. tariff policies.
Amidst the uncertainty of U.S. trade policy direction and the dynamics of U.S.-China relations, Sri Mulyani emphasized that Indonesia will still maintain an active and adaptive negotiation approach. She stressed that domestic economic strength, structural reforms, and national food resilience strengthen Indonesia's bargaining position. "Negotiations are indeed for giving and offering, and then compromising," she said.
