TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The University of Indonesia (UI) announced through a circular letter that it would investigate former student Iqbal Cheisa Wiguna, who continued to identify himself as the Chair of the UI Student Executive Body (BEM UI) after his graduation, particularly during the Dark Indonesia Rally.
The letter No. S-0420/UN2.KMHS/PDP.00.05.00/2025 signed by UI's Director of Student Affairs and Scholarships, Sudibyo, confirmed that Iqbal was officially recognized as a University of Indonesia graduate on January 20, 2025.
"The University of Indonesia will investigate any actions of the individual representing himself as the Chair of the Student Executive Body of the University of Indonesia after that date," as written in the letter signed on Monday, February 24, 2025.
The legal basis for this circular letter refers to Article 1, Number 10 of the UI Rector's Decision No. 1952/SK/R/UI/2015 regarding the Organization and Management of the University of Indonesia's Student Affairs. This decision defines UI students as those who are administratively registered at UI at the diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels.
Arie Afriansyah, UI Director of Public Relations, Media, Government, and International, confirmed that Iqbal is no longer a student at the University of Indonesia. "Therefore, he does not have the authority in any student activities after passing the graduation period," he told Tempo through the UI public relations staff on Thursday, February 27, 2025.
Tempo has attempted to contact Iqbal Cheisa Wiguna to obtain the chronology of events related to this circular letter. However, as of this writing, Iqbal has not provided a response.
Iqbal participated in the Dark Indonesia rally at the Patung Kuda area in Central Jakarta on Monday, February 17, 2025. On February 15, through an official Instagram post of BEM UI, Iqbal expressed opposition to the efficiency policy or budget cuts of ministries and institutions implemented by President Prabowo Subianto.
BEM UI demanded that Prabowo immediately revoke Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 1 of 2025, which stipulates budget cuts as it is deemed unfavorable to the people. In addition, BEM UI stated other demands, including the cancellation of the proposal to grant mining management rights to campuses, the prompt disbursement of lecturers' allowances, and the evaluation the Free Nutritious Meal program (MBG).
