TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is confident that he can salvage his relationship with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, after their surprising dispute in the Oval Office. As reported by Reuters on Sunday, he added that the discussions need to continue in private.
In an unprecedented meeting broadcast live on Friday from the White House, Trump accused Zelensky of being ungrateful for the U.S. aid, showing disrespect to his country, and risking World War Three. This raised doubts about Washington's support for Ukraine.
Zelensky, speaking to reporters after a summit with European leaders in London, said he did not think the U.S. would cut off aid to Ukraine. He said, as a civilized world leader, the U.S. does not want to help Russian President Vladimir Putin.
However, Zelensky admitted he is ready to face any challenges that may arise.
He believes that the relationship between Kyiv and Washington will continue. He told to reporters through an interpreter after the meeting in London.
But he added, "I do not think it's right when such discussions are totally open. ... The format of what happened, I don't think it brought something positive or additional to us as partners."
Zelensky added that he is still ready to sign a proposed mineral deal with the U.S. and is confident that America will also be ready.
