TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On Thursday, March 13, 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin was preparing to reject a ceasefire proposal but was still hesitant to communicate this refusal directly to US President Donald Trump.
In his evening address, Zelensky said they suspect Russia has set conditions to delay or not actualize the ceasefire at all.
"He is in fact preparing a rejection at present, because Putin is of course scared to tell President Trump that he wants to continue this war, that he wants to kill Ukrainians," said Zelensky, as quoted by Reuters.
"That's why in Moscow they are imposing upon the idea of a ceasefire these conditions, so that nothing happens at all, or so that it cannot happen for as long as possible."
He also pledged to work under the strong leadership of Trump to achieve lasting peace. Zelensky assured that he wants to improve the situation. Washington had previously expressed readiness to arrange control and verification of the ceasefire.
This, according to Zelensky, can be ascertained with the various possibilities held by the United States and Europe.
"This is possible to ensure, with America's possibilities, and Europe's possibilities," he added.
Zelensky stated that a ceasefire would allow time to develop solutions for long-term security, establish a genuine and reliable peace, and present a concrete plan to end the war.
