TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Countries must do more to prevent cyberbullying and address inequalities in access to assistive technology that hinders the rights of persons with disabilities, especially women and children.
This discourse arises after a group of human rights activists complained to the UN Human Rights Council about the lack of equal access, particularly assistive devices for women and children with disabilities.
"The international community was failing to uphold a fundamental tenet of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with regard to people with disabilities, namely that all people are born equal," said Volker Türk, the Head of Human Rights at the United Nations, as quoted from UNNews, Monday, March 10, 2025.
According to Volker, people with disabilities are discriminated against, marginalized, restricted, oppressed, and belittled in all regions. This behavior is widely experienced by people with disabilities, especially women and children. ''They are targeted and ignored,'' said Volker.
The High Commissioner for Human Rights also highlights that online communities involving women and children with disabilities experience cyberbullying.
According to the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), cyberbullying against women and children means various forms of pressure, aggression, harassment, extortion, humiliation, defamation, including identity theft.
At the event, the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Heba Hagrass, noted that the disability rights graph has regressed by 14 percent from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target. She added that as much as 30 percent indicates inadequate changes.
Moreover, the Disability and Development Report 2024 states that the situation for women and children with disabilities is worse due to increasingly severe discrimination they face.
In line with the UN, the Australian e-Safety Commissioner notes that many women with disabilities experience bullying in the field of technology. This bullying particularly affects women with disabilities who have various intellectual and cognitive disabilities.
