TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian declared that the United States will fail to achieve its objectives through economic pressure on Tehran, coming days after Washington rolled out a new campaign of sanctions against the country.
Pezeshkian delivered the remarks on Tuesday during a three-hour session at the Central Bank of Iran in Tehran alongside Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh, Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati, and a panel of economists.
The meeting addressed Iran's monetary, foreign exchange, and financial metrics against the backdrop of what Pezeshkian described as the compounding strains of war, economic blockades, and external pressure.
He underscored the critical need to preserve overall economic stability while reining in inflationary expectations.
Pezeshkian noted that stabilizing core markets, especially foreign exchange and monetary systems, demands seamless coordination between the government, the Central Bank, and allied economic bodies.
"Our approach is understanding and resolving issues through interaction and negotiation, but at the same time, we have stood and will continue to stand firmly against economic pressure," Pezeshkian stated.
He asserted that Washington failed to reach its aims during wartime owing to the resilience of Iran's armed forces and widespread public backing.
Pezeshkian maintained that Washington would similarly "gain nothing" from applying financial squeeze tactics on Tehran.
On Monday, the administration of US President Donald Trump initiated Operation Economic Outcast, an extensive sanctions blitz designed to deepen Iran's isolation from global financial networks.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained that the new penalties focus on critical pillars of the Iranian economy, including aviation, maritime shipping, gold markets, technology, and digital assets.
The sweeping sanctions explicitly blacklist more than 60 entities, individuals, and maritime vessels.
Bessent stated that Washington's primary aim is to sever Iran's main economic lifeline, characterizing the effort as an intended "economic strangulation" of the Iranian government.
