TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States (US) launched another round of military strikes against Iran on Tuesday, escalating the conflict just hours before a renewed US naval blockade on Iranian ports took effect, while Tehran declared the move had effectively nullified a recently brokered truce between the two countries.
DW reported that the latest strikes targeted Iranian military capabilities allegedly linked to attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime trade routes.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the operation began at 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
"US Central Command forces began launching an additional round of strikes against Iran to continue degrading Iranian capabilities used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz," CENTCOM said in a statement posted on X.
The strikes preceded the enforcement of a renewed US naval blockade on Iranian ports and coastal areas, which officially took effect later on Tuesday.
Unnamed US officials told Reuters and the Associated Press that the attacks were intended to eliminate what they described as "emerging threats," although they did not provide further operational details.
According to Iranian state media, several areas were affected by the attacks.
Iran's official news agency IRNA reported that projectiles struck a location on Hengam Island, describing the attack as carried out by the "American enemy."
The semi-official Mehr News Agency reported that air defense systems were activated around the Bushehr nuclear power plant, while unconfirmed reports of explosions also emerged from the towns of Bampur and Chabahar. Iranian authorities later denied reports of explosions in those locations.
Meanwhile, the United States formally reinstated a naval blockade on Iranian ports, marking the second such measure imposed this year.
The previous blockade was lifted in June after Washington and Tehran signed a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding aimed at easing tensions.
Before restoring the blockade, US President Donald Trump had proposed charging a 20 percent transit fee for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz under US military protection. He later withdrew the proposal following objections from US allies in the Gulf.
Iran strongly condemned the renewed blockade, arguing that it effectively destroyed the diplomatic agreement reached only weeks earlier.
According to DW, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said President Trump's decision had "in a way, dismantled the Islamabad memorandum," adding that Tehran no longer considered itself bound by the commitments contained in the agreement.
Speaking to Iranian state television, Gharibabadi stressed that the Strait of Hormuz remains part of Iran's national security and vowed that Tehran would defend its sovereignty over the strategic waterway "at all costs."
The regional conflict also expanded beyond Iran.
In Yemen, the Iran-backed Houthi movement claimed it had shot down a Saudi drone conducting what it described as "hostile missions" over Al-Bayda Governorate.
The incident came one day after the Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of attacking Sanaa International Airport, raising concerns about renewed hostilities between the two sides following the collapse of a fragile 2022 ceasefire.
Elsewhere in the Gulf, Bahrain activated rocket warning sirens after authorities detected what they described as incoming aerial threats.
The Bahraini Interior Ministry urged residents to remain calm and seek shelter in the nearest safe location.
"Citizens and residents are urged to remain calm and head to the nearest safe place," the ministry said in a statement posted on X.
Bahrain has been among the regional countries targeted by Iranian retaliation following recent US military operations, underscoring growing fears that the confrontation between Washington and Tehran could spread further across the Middle East.
