TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Red Sparks were defeated in the second game of the South Korean Women's Volleyball League (V-League) semifinal playoffs. Megawati Hangestri and her teammates suffered a 0-3 (20-25, 17-25, 22-25) loss to Hyundai Hillstate during the match at Chungmu Gymnasium, Daejeon, South Korea, on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
Visiting the Red Sparks' home base, Hillstate applied pressure from the beginning of the match to seize the lead in the first set. The visiting team started to dominate by recording a score of 14-11. Meanwhile, the Red Sparks, playing in front of their home crowd, put up a tough fight and closed the gap to 14-15.
However, the relentless attacks by Laetitia Moma Bassoko, which were difficult to handle, continued to score points, taking Hillstate further ahead with a score of 20-17, ultimately winning the first set with a score of 25-20.
Red Sparks took control of the game in the second set by scoring 4-1. However, Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi and her teammates' lead did not last long as Hillstate equalized the score. The point tally for both teams was closely contested.
Hillstate managed to turn the tables and take the lead. The Red Sparks' resistance, which was not sharp enough due to the absence of their main setter Yeom Hye-seon, allowed the visiting team to further dominate and end the third set with a score of 25-20.
Leading by two sets strengthened Hillstate players' mental state as they entered the third set. Moma and her teammates continued to press the Red Sparks with sharp spikes. On the other hand, Megawati and her teammates put up a fight. Intense competition in the third set started when both teams tied at 16-16.
A continuous tie occurred from 18-18 to 22-22. The Red Sparks' resistance was halted when Moma's soft touch for ball placement was unanticipated, allowing Hillstate to take the lead again. The Red Sparks failed to capitalize on two service ball opportunities from their opponent to score points, ultimately succumbing with a final score of 22-25.
With this result, Megawati and her teammates will be fighting hard again when they visit Hillstate's base for the third match for a spot in the Korean V-League Grand Final. The winning team will face the Pink Spiders, who are waiting in the final round after emerging as the regular season champion.
