TEMPO.CO, JakartaVenice has imposed a tourist tax for daily visitors of 5 euros or around Rp85,000 per person since last year. This daily fee is expected to reduce the impact of tourism on the canal city.

Now, the popular UNESCO World Heritage Site city in Italy is doubling the daily tourist fee. The rate for those who do not make a reservation and pay at least four days in advance will increase to 10 euros or Rp169,000, according to the local tourism office.

Preventing Tourist Overcrowding

Reported from the New York Post, Tuesday, February 11, 2025, the tourist entrance fee was initially touted as a method to prevent overcrowding during certain peak season dates. Tourists will be fined 50 euros (Rp851,000) to 300 euros (Rp5.1 million) if caught not paying.

The fee is paid by tourists who come during the peak season, between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm. The city is also increasing the number of days from 29 in 2024 to 54 in 2025. The peak travel period is April, May, June, and July.

Local tourism official Simone Venturini said the fee was considered "sexy," claiming that other destinations struggling with overtourism were also interested in implementing similar fees.

"We confirm that several institutional bodies, both Italian and international, have contacted the City of Venice to gain a deeper understanding of [the fee]," a spokesperson told Business Insider.

Kyoto, Japan, Formentera in Spain, Zermatt, Switzerland, and other Italian destinations have all made inquiries, she said.

Additional Revenue

Business Insider also said the change has added €2.4 million to the city's coffers, the intended effect of keeping visitor numbers from breaking records during the usual peak travel period.

Calling his city a “pioneer” in the fight against overtourism, Venturini said the new system for managing the influx of tourists was in keeping with the city’s complex and unique nature.

But the policy has not been universally supported by residents. Last year, angry activists took to the streets, alleys and canals of the former maritime republic to protest the new scheme. They said Venice’s mayor Luigi Brugnaro, who approved the scheme, had turned one of the world’s most romantic destinations into nothing more than an amusement park.

“I would say that almost the whole city is against it,” local activist Matteo Secchi said at the time. “You can’t charge an entrance fee to a city; all they’ve done is turn it into an amusement park. It’s a bad image for Venice,” he added.
