TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  The number of unemployed people in Jakarta declined by around 10,000 in May 2026 compared with February 2026, as more workers moved into full-time employment, according to the Jakarta Statistics Agency (BPS Jakarta).

BPS Jakarta Head Kadarmanto said the decline reflected stronger labor absorption during the February-May 2026 period, with many workers transitioning into full-time jobs.

“This shows that most of the labor force during the February to May period was absorbed into full-time employment,” Kadarmanto said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

More Full-Time Jobs Absorb Labor Force

The number of full-time workers in Jakarta reached 4.36 million in May 2026, an increase of around 139,000 peoplecompared with the previous period.

Meanwhile, the number of part-time workers also increased by around 16,000 to 682,000 people.

At the same time, the number of underemployed workers declined by around 91,000 to 225,000 people.

BPS defines full-time workers as those working at least 35 hours per week, while part-time workers work fewer than 35 hours per week but are not seeking additional employment or are unavailable for other jobs.

Underemployed workers are those working fewer than 35 hours per week who are still looking for or willing to accept additional work.

Trade and Services Lead Job Absorption

Kadarmanto said the sectors with the highest labor absorption in Jakarta were wholesale and retail trade, accommodation and food services, and transportation and warehousing.

The improvement in employment conditions was also reflected in Jakarta’s open unemployment rate (TPT), which declined to 5.79 percent in May 2026 from 6.03 percent in February 2026.

The latest figures indicate a gradual improvement in Jakarta’s labor market as more residents find employment opportunities and fewer workers remain unemployed.
