TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The South Korean presidential election has been officially scheduled for June 3, 2025, according to a report by Antara.
The announcement follows the Constitutional Court’s validation of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment. Acting President Han Duck Soo confirmed that the government has finalized the date for the election.
Quoted from Al Jazeera, Han Duck-soo stated on Tuesday, April 8 that the government chose the election date to ensure a smooth electoral process and to give political parties adequate time to make preparations.
Opposition Party's Demands
Cited from Anadolu, South Korea's main opposition party demands the acting president to announce the date of the snap presidential election following the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol.
Speaking at a press conference at the National Assembly in Seoul, Democratic Party secretary-general Kim Yoon-deok urged acting President Han Duck-soo to "promptly announce the presidential election date and formally commit to political neutrality."
Kim made the decision two days after the Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol for imposing martial law in December 2024.
60 Days
Cited from The Korea Herald, according to the constitution, a new president must be elected within 60 days after the presidential office is vacant. The Public Official Election Act also stipulates that the date must be announced no later than 50 days before the election.
Han Duck Soo is required to set the election date between May 24 and June 3 following the ruling. If the election is set for June 3, candidates must register on May 10 or May 11, 24 days before the voting. The campaign season will then run from May 12 to June 2, a day before the election.
Ballot Testing
Cited from Yonhap, South Korean citizens cast their votes on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 for the election of Busan's educational chief and local government heads in a simple election. This election also marked the first ballot test since the attempt to impeach Yoon Suk Yeol.
The contested seats included 23 positions, including the education superintendent for Busan, the head of Guro district in Seoul and the southwestern Damyang area, as well as mayors for the central part of Asan, Gimcheon in North Gyeongsang, and Geoje in South Gyeongsang Province, among others.
