TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto dismissed Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa on Monday, September 14, 2026, replacing him with Suahasil Nazara, who had served as deputy finance minister since October 21, 2024, when the Red and White Cabinet was formed.
Purbaya had served as finance minister since September 2025. The reshuffle marks the second time Prabowo has replaced the country's finance minister since taking office.
Prabowo previously replaced Sri Mulyani Indrawati with Purbaya on September 8, 2025. Purbaya served as finance minister for one year and six days.
Suahasil Nazara's Profile
Suahasil began his career as a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Indonesia in 1999. He was appointed a professor of economics in 2009.
According to the Finance Ministry's official website, Suahasil served as head of the Graduate Program in Economics from 2004 to 2005, head of the Demographic Institute from 2005 to 2008, and head of the Department of Economics from 2009 to 2013.
His career in public policy included several government advisory positions. He was a member of the Finance Minister's Fiscal Decentralization Assistance Team from 2009 to 2011, deputy chairperson of the Supervisory Committee for Regional Autonomy Implementation from 2009 to 2015, policy working group coordinator at the Secretariat of the National Team for the Acceleration of Poverty Reduction from 2010 to 2015, and a member of the National Economic Committee from 2013 to 2014.
Born on November 23, 1970, Suahasil rose further within the Finance Ministry after being appointed permanent head of the Fiscal Policy Agency on October 31, 2016.
On October 25, 2019, he was appointed deputy finance minister in President Joko Widodo's Indonesia Onward Cabinet, serving alongside Sri Mulyani.
Suahasil, who is from Nias, North Sumatra, earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Indonesia in 1994. He then pursued graduate studies at Cornell University in the United States, earning a Master of Science degree in 1997.
He later completed his doctoral studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, earning a Ph.D. in economics in 2003.
