Why Hotman Paris Resigned as Febrie Adriansyah's Lawyer

4 hours ago 24

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Renowned lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea has announced his resignation as legal counsel for former Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes, Febrie Adriansyah.

"Based on [health] considerations, I informed my client two days ago that I am resigning," Hotman said on Thursday, July 23, 2026. Reports suggested that Hotman had recently undergone pinched nerve surgery in Singapore.

Hotman was appointed as Febrie's legal counsel on Friday, July 17, 2026. The official signing of his appointment took place at the Attorney General's Office for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) building. On the same day, after accompanying Febrie during questioning, Hotman held a press conference.

During the press briefing, he raised several objections regarding the legal cases entangling his client. Febrie was previously implicated in three police-handled cases: alleged corruption and money laundering in the state-owned insurer PT Asabri case, alleged corruption at state-owned steelmaker PT Krakatau Steel, and graft involving coal management at state-owned electricity firm PLN. Febrie has since been named a suspect in the PT Asabri case.

Among Hotman's objections was the assertion that Febrie never received S$5 million from Tan Kian, a witness in the 2021 prosecution-led Asabri investigation.

Hotman also stated that 74 kilograms of gold, alongside US$4,767,300, S$14,083,800, and Rp100 million found at Febrie's residence in Sentul, Bogor, did not belong to his client. Instead, he maintained that the assets belonged to Don Ritto, a money laundering suspect in the PT Asabri case. Hotman further affirmed that Febrie had no connection whatsoever to the de'Clan Signature café in Cipete, which was raided and searched by the police in early July.
